This explains what the JaySmitt Travel Planner collects, what it does with it, and how to get it back or get rid of it. It is written to be read, not to be survived.
Who we are
The JaySmitt Travel Planner is made by JaySmitt Labs, LLC. If you have a question about anything here, write to smitt@jaysmittlabs.com and a person will answer.
What stays on your device
By default, everything. Your trips, stops, notes, checklists, budgets, photos and settings are stored by your own web browser on the device you are using. We cannot see them. Clearing your browser data removes them, so use the export button if a trip matters to you.
Photos
Pictures you add to a stop are stored in your browser at a reduced size. When you save one to your phone, the app writes that stop's map position into the picture file so your gallery can place it on a map. That happens on your device.
Your location
The location button asks your browser for your position and draws it on the map. That position is used on your device and is not sent to us or to anyone else. Location is off unless you switch it on, and switching it off stops it immediately.
What happens if you make an account
An account exists for one reason: so your trips show up on your phone and your computer instead of being stuck on one of them. If you create one, we store:
- Your email address and a scrambled version of your password. We never see your actual password.
- Your trips, so they can be handed back to you on your other devices. This includes stops, notes, checklists, budgets and reminders. Photos usually stay on the device that added them because of their size.
Accounts and trip data are held for us by Supabase, a hosting company, in a database set up so that each account can only reach its own trips.
You can delete everything at any time by writing to smitt@jaysmittlabs.com. We will remove your account and its trips, and confirm when it is done.
The email list
If you leave your email address on the front page, we use it to tell you when the app changes in ways worth knowing about. Nothing else. Every message has an unsubscribe link, and asking us to remove you is enough. Those addresses are collected through Netlify, the company that hosts this site.
Other services the app talks to
To do its job, the planner asks a few outside services for information. When it does, those services necessarily see the request — for example, the two points you want a route between. None of them are told who you are.
- OpenStreetMap — the map images themselves.
- Nominatim — turning a place name into a location, and back again.
- OpenRouteService (HeiGIT) — working out the driving route, distance and time.
- Open-Meteo — the weather forecast for a stop.
- Netlify — hosting this site, which means it records ordinary web server information such as the address your connection comes from.
Links to hotel and map sites
Buttons on a stop can open Booking, Priceline, Expedia, Hotels.com, Airbnb or Google in a new tab, already searching that place. Once you are on their site you are their visitor, under their rules, not ours. We may in future earn a commission if you book through one of those links, at no extra cost to you. If that starts, it will say so here and on the site.
Cookies and tracking
We do not use advertising cookies and we do not track you across other websites. The app stores information in your browser so it can remember your trips and whether you are signed in. That storage is what makes the app work, and it stays on your device.
Children
This app is meant for adults planning travel. It is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has made an account, write to us and we will remove it.
Your choices
- Use the app without an account, and nothing leaves your device.
- Export any trip to a file you keep yourself.
- Ask for a copy of what your account holds, or ask us to delete it.
- Leave the email list at any time.
Changes to this policy
If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change is significant — such as starting to earn commission on bookings, or charging for the app — we will say so plainly rather than quietly editing this page.
